Do any of you have a chinchilla playpen?

I have a small animal playpen and think it sucks. Are there any that don't?

Thanks.

Respiratory Infections?

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 4:42 PM
I'm rat sitting over the holidays and picked up the little guys just now. Their owner neglected to tell me that one of the little guys is being treated for an upper respiratory infection, and I'm a little worried about it. I only found out when I was unpacking him after picking him up (nice, huh?). I've been googling, but haven't found any good information on whether this would be contagious to chinchillas or other animals. The rats are being kept in a completely different area of the house, but I'm still worried it could carry through the air or on my clothes and infect my chinchillas (or my other animals..I have an elderly cat with a compromised immune system). I know it's a long shot, but I was hoping someone here might have some answers. Thanks for any info you might have!

Help!

Hello! My boyfriend and I are new Chinchilla owners, we adopted two males about two months ago. We were told they were a year old and had lived together all their lives. For the first two months here they were best buddies. They slept together curled up with ones head on the others butt all cozy and always seemed to play nicely. Often they curled up together in their house one big ball of softness. We named them Roku and Momo, Roku has always been bigger than Momo, I don't think it's an overeating thing I figured they were just different sizes.

Trouble started last week. First we noticed patches of fur around the cage. I did a lot of reading and some sources said they do shed in the winter a little and it was the first week it had actually gotten cold around here. Then while petting momo we realized he had scabs on his back. I did more research. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have ringworm his eyes are clear and there's no red patches anywhere else. Then as we're sitting there pondering Roku starts messing with Momo's back. I'm pretty sure he was biting him! They start running frantically around the cage as if Roku is chasing Momo. (I know I'm giving them human emotions but it's so hard not to!) We bought them a ton of new chewy things and gave them extra playtime with us outside the cage, that seemed to help for a couple days, but now they seem to get along one second and Roku is pulling Momos fur out the other. But if we seperate them for any length of time they both get agitated and the one in the cage runs around anxiously looking out. I'm getting worried because this morning momo had a scratch on the inside of his ear that was bleeding a little. If we need to take them to the vet we will but we're also broke. so I'm asking for advice first. If it's a behavioral thing and the only thing to do is separate them then I'd rather not pay an exotic vet to tell me that.

Help me! I just want my happy chinchillas to get along! We did recently switch their food from the generic brand they came to us with to Oxbo because a vet friend of mine recommended it, could that be doing it? They get plenty of hay, fresh water and one raisin each a night.

Thanks,
Robin

I just wanted to update on my wonder chins. Terrah is doing great, though I am monitoring both her weight and Mia's for changes. I found a vet here who will take out her stitches and also who will be able to check her if I have any concerns.

Below the cut are the X-rays from last night. They are sort of interesting, so I just thought I would share. Can you find the twins' spines?
